Cities: Patterns in Time

The essence of my photography is an appreciation of simple beauty. I find a sensual mystery in the changes of light that alter the composition. Looking through a lens, I see a synchronicity of life, a connection to all things that is often lost when viewed without the edge of a frame.

My vision of Los Angeles, as an organically growing entity, was inspired by Steven Johnson’s book “Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities and Software” which examines how ant colonies and industrial age cities, among other systems function with the phenomenon of Self-Organization. Self-Organization is a process in which spontaneous order arises from interactions of initially disordered decentralized systems. Self-organization occurs in chemical, biological, robotic and cognitive systems as well as describing the forces that define urban demographic clustering.


Cities: A Pattern in Time represents a life long effort to create urban landscape photographs using the four basic elements of Southern California, Light, Sky, Concrete and Freeways. Los Angeles has transformed at volcanic speed creating patterns that destroy each other only to re-emerge transformed into another cliché’. idiom or style. My influences include Piet Mondrian, Richard Diebenkorn, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still and Edward Weston.


The images are printed on Hahnemuhle (founded in 1584) archival paper. I look forward to any comments you may have.
